The Microscopy Laboratory at Hunter College

We are developing innovative technologies to visualize the structure and function of neuronal systems. Three research areas are currently at focus. 1) Probing microtubules in the axon of retinal ganglion cell. We recently demonstrated the use of second-harmonic generation for visualization of the retinal nerve fibers, which is well-suited for elucidating early pathogenic events of glaucoma. 2) Label-free imaging of myelin in vivo. We employ the nonlinear optical process of third-harmonic generation to study the axon-glia interactions underlying myelination. 3) Imaging gene expression in the brain of living mouse. We are testing newly developed fluorescent proteins for visualizing the neuronal network.
