    Asian American Activism, Civil Rights and a Better Tomorrow with Helen Zia

    Helen Zia is a writer and activist. She is the daughter of immigrants from China and was born and raised in New Jersey. Her latest book, Last Boat out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese who Fled Mao’s Revolution, was one of NPR’s Best Books and a finalist for a 2020 PEN America prize. Helen’s first book, Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, about the civil rights struggles of Asian Americans, and it is still used as a foundational history text in colleges and high schools. She also wrote My Country Versus Me with nuclear physicist Wen Ho Lee, who was falsely accused by the FBI of being a spy.

    A selection of Helen Zia’s books will be available for sale following the discussion.

    Coffee and Donuts @ Asian Student Affinity Space

    The Asian American Studies Program, in collaboration with the Asian Student Affinity Space, invites you to join us for the first Coffee & Donuts meetup of the semester! We will also provide food! Not just coffee and donuts! No RSVPs are needed for the event.

    Coffee & Donuts meetups are informal gatherings open to all Hunter College students who are interested in Asian American Studies and Asian American social issues. You do not have to be an AAS Minors of Asian-identified to join. Our intention is to create spaces of community for students to connect with AASP, faculty, and other students. For this Coffee & Donuts, we are collaborating with the Asian Student Affinity Space, brought to you by the Division of Student Affairs. We will share some resources our programs currently offer and are advancing to support our students!

    Please join us for an important event to showcase and build support for an extensive digital curriculum resource for high schools, colleges and "lifetime learners," about the history, issues, and communities of today's Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This has been a work-in-progress at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, and its Director Karen Umemoto will be in NYC to show us sample chapters about the Tape Family and Chinese American Civil Rights, Japanese American Incarceration During World War II, and Labor and Activism of Filipino Farmworkers.
