BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences FAQs
To become an MLS major, you must be accepted through a formal application process. All students, including currently enrolled Hunter College students, must complete the CUNY Transfer Application to apply. To learn about program requirements and applying, visit our Undergraduate page.
To check your application status, visit the CUNY Application Status page. Alternatively, you may contact Hunter College admissions for further information.
Review for all applications will begin after the deadline for that semester (Sept 15th for Spring semester applications, February 1st for Fall semester applications). Review can take 6 – 8 weeks. Final decisions are usually sent out from Hunter College Undergraduate Admissions Office starting in November for Spring applications and in April for Fall applications. Please note that this timeline is subject to change.
We do not require recommendation letters, essays, or resumes/CVs for the BS in Medical Lab Sciences. The extracurriculars section of the transfer application is also not required. If you still wish to submit these items, they will not be reviewed as part of your application.
Not yet! High school seniors should apply to Hunter College using the Freshman application. After acceptance, the focus should be on completing the General Biology (BIO 100 & 102) and General Chemistry (CHEM 102, 104, & 106) courses along with courses that meet the General Education Requirement (GER)/Common Core throughout their freshman and sophomore years.
Students will be eligible to apply using the transfer application when they reach 60 credits (Lower Junior standing) or will have 60 credits at the end of the semester they’re currently in.
Admission to the BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences is competitive. On average, we accept 25 – 30 students per semester.
For troubleshooting for CUNY applications, please contact Hunter Admissions or the Student Help Desk within CUNY Admissions.
The MLS Department is no longer able to review transcripts for students before they apply. Applications and transcripts are reviewed by CUNY Admissions and Hunter College Undergraduate Admissions only.
If you are transferring from another CUNY school, you can use the CUNY Transfer Explorer to see how your courses will transfer to Hunter. On the site, use the CUNY-to-CUNY by course option.
If you are transferring from a non-CUNY school, it is best to speak with the admissions office at your school to see if there are any tools available to see how your credits will transfer. You may also use the CUNY Transfer explorer using the Non-CUNY Courses, Training, and Exams option. Depending on the non-CUNY school you’re transferring from, many of your courses may not be available to view equivalences for on the Explorer.
When submitting your application, your transcript will be evaluated by Hunter College Undergraduate Admissions. If accepted to Hunter, you will then receive a Transfer Credit Report on your CUNYFirst account which will show how your credits were evaluated. The Medical Laboratory Sciences Department does NOT oversee credit evaluations.
For further assistance on this, please contact Hunter Admissions.
Because it’s important to gauge your performance in Biology and Chemistry, we do not accept AP scores in place of letter grades for the General Biology and Chemistry courses. All students must take these classes prior to applying to the program.
Yes, as long as the course you’d like to take at the other CUNY school is equivalent to required course at Hunter. You can check for yourself using the CUNY Transfer Explorer. On the site, use the CUNY-to-CUNY by course option.
For General Chemistry I & II, the course at the other CUNY must be equivalent to CHEM 102, 104, or 106 at Hunter. CHEM 103 or 105 is also acceptable.
For General Biology I & II, the course at the other CUNY must be equivalent to BIO 100 and BIO 102 at Hunter.
We have co-requisite courses, meaning, courses you can take before OR after you are accepted to the program. These classes are:
- STAT 11300 Elementary Probability and Statistics
- PHYS 11000 General Physics: Introductory Course in Mechanics, Heat, and Sound
- CHEM 222/223 Organic Chemistry I Lecture & Lab
Taking these courses prior to admission does not give advantage to your application. However, students who take CHEM 222/223 Organic Chemistry I beforehand may be eligible to take MLSP 351 Clinical Microbiology I within their first semester of MLS (space availability depending).
The Medical Laboratory Sciences program is New York State License qualifying. This means the graduates from our program will only be qualified to take the New York State Licensure Exam to work as Clinical Lab Technologists within New York State.
If you wish to work in another state, you will need to follow that state’s guidelines in order to be able to be licensed there.
We do not offer online classes for the undergraduate program.
While some of our courses have evening lab sections available, the Medical Lab Sciences program will require a daytime commitment as majority of our lectures and labs are offered in the morning and early afternoon hours. We do not offer weekend classes.
You’ll need to complete the CUNY Transfer application and after acceptance, then you’ll need to apply for an F-1 Student Visa. You may reach out to the International Students Office for full details.
