Green Office Certification

Laptop work setup

The Hunter Green Office Certification Program supports and encourages administrative offices and academic departments in reducing their environmental footprint. Our goal is to advance Hunter Green’s commitment to sustainability by actively empowering faculty and staff to become environmental stewards and leaders in their workplace communities, and supporting the work together in making sustainable decisions and creating greener habits. This initiative supports Hunter Green’s 10-Year Sustainability Action Plan Goals by engaging faculty and staff as partners in campus-wide environmental progress.

How does the Green Office Certification work?

The Green Office program guides offices through a certification process using a points-based assessment.

The assessment consists of 40 questions that introduce multiple areas of sustainable practice. Each question is designed to expand the office’s engagement with sustainable practices and to facilitate thoughtful discussion and conversation between your office mates and as a collective group. The sustainable behaviors and practices encompassed within the certification assessment have different point values based on the level of behavior change and depth of implementation required. For example – for 2 points the initiative requires behavior change through measurable actions, for 3 points it requires a cultural change of the office system, and so on. There is a section at the end of the assessment for offices to also self-report their own sustainable innovations and office-driven initiatives for a chance to earn additional points.

Following survey completion, Hunter Green will assess survey results, score them, and arrange a review meeting to notify your office of the Certification level achieved, key performance areas where the office has excelled, and tailored suggestions and opportunities to enhance each office.

It is recommended to have a designated Green Champion liaison, or create a Green Team that will complete the survey. This individual (or team) will be the ones responsible for submitting the assessment, meeting and checking-in with Hunter Green in review of their office score, and for review of opportunity items that may result from the Certification.

FAQs

For the purposes of the Certification program, the definitions are very flexible and may depend on how your corner of the college is structured. An office is typically going to apply to staff members as a shared suite or area where you regularly interact with the same colleagues working on similar projects, whereas a department will typically apply more to faculty. Departments (for example, Anthropology, Economics, Geography and Environmental Science, etc.) would apply as a single unit.

Offices that are awarded certification receive an e-badge and a physical badge to be posted and displayed in the office work environment. Offices will also be highlighted on the Hunter Green website to showcase and gain recognition amongst their peers.

The Green Office Certification is designed to cover an array of topics and operations applicable to the various offices and departments across campus. Specific areas include: Energy, Waste, Purchasing, Education & Outreach, as well as an optional Innovative Practices section for offices seeking additional points.

While this program is voluntary, offices are encouraged to renew their Green Office status into a new one at the end of each year. Your office will actually receive an automatic point for doing so!

Green Office Certification remains valid for 1 year from date of issue.

Yes. The Hunter Green Office Certification is an inaugural campus sustainability outreach program. As office and department participation builds over time, participant feedback, data metrics, and user experiences will be leveraged by the Sustainability Office to periodically evolve and release more comprehensive Office Certification units with advanced sustainability champions and goals in future timelines.

Offices and departments can progress through higher levels of the certification with the support and guidance of the Green Office team. Hunter Green will remain as a resource to provide the necessary tools and assistance to help your team succeed.

NOTE: We understand that each office is different. If you feel that a question in the assessment does not apply to your office structure, you may answer "Not Applicable". These questions will be excluded from your final score. All questions refer specifically to office or work activities only unless otherwise noted. You may stop and save your answers at any time.
