French Major

The French major provides two concentrations:
1. French Literature (30 cr).
A concentration in French
literature that emphasizes the study of literary works and criticism. 3 credits from FREN
311, 312, 321;6 credits in FREN 341, 342; 21 credits fromFREN 331, 335, 336, 337,
343, 344, 346, 348,349, 350, 351, 353, 360, 361, 363, 365, 375,491, 495. Students planning to teach in
grades 7-12must also complete 3 credits in Second
Language Acquisition: FREN 399, 495
orSEDC 212 or SEDC 712.
2. French Language and Civilization (30 cr)
A concentration in French
language as well as in French and Francophone literature, culture and
civilization. 12 credits from the language sequence (Group A); 0-9 credits from
GroupB (offered in English); and 9-18 credits from Group C (offered in French).
- Group A: FREN 220, 275, 311, 312, 321, 331.
- Group B: FREN 241, 242, 251, 253, 254, 255,256, 257, 258, 259, 260, 261, 262.
- Group C: FREN 335, 336, 337, 341, 342, 343,344, 346, 348, 349, 350, 351, 353, 360, 361,362, 363, 364, 365, 375, 491, 495.
Within the Language and Civilization concentration, students may choose either French 241 or French 335 (but not both) and either French 242 or French 336 (but not both) to count towards the major.
