Science Professor Jill Bargonetti (Biology) does gene research related to cancer and AIDS and has received a U.S. Presidential Early Career Award, an Outstanding Woman Scientist Award, and a New York City Mayor’s Award. Distinguished Professor Marie Filbin (Biology), whose awards have included the Ameritec Prize, a Javits Investigator Award, and many grants from the Multiple Sclerosis Society, has made research breakthroughs that have important therapeutic potential for victims of spinal-cord injuries and other nervous system illnesses. Dixie Goss, the Gertrude B. Elion Scholar in Chemistry and Chair of the Department, whose research includes studies of RNA and protein interactions, has been named a New York Outstanding Woman Scientist and one of the National Science Foundation’s 100 Most Outstanding Scientists. She is chair of the chemistry department. Steve Greenbaum (Physics) was one of 10 educators nationwide to receive a U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Mentoring.

Health Science; Social Sciences Distinguished Professor Nicholas Freudenberg is director of Hunter’s program in urban public health, the only accredited public health program focused specifically on urban communities. The founder and longtime director of the college’s Center on AIDS, Drugs, and Community Health, he has been called “the most influential individual in the U.S. in the field of health promotion for disadvantaged urban populations.” Distinguished Professor Victoria Luine (Psychology), director of Hunter’s Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program, is an internationally recognized expert on the effect of hormones on both cognitive and reproductive function. Named an Outstanding Woman Scientist by the Association for Women in Science, she has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Rockefeller Foundation, and other important scientific organizations. Distinguished Professor Rosalind Petchesky (Political Science), whose many awards include a “genius grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is founder of the International Reproductive Rights Research Action Group and an acknowledged authority on feminist political theory, sexuality and reproduction, and related issues. Distinguished Professor Virginia Valian (Psychology) is internationally recognized for her investigations of gender-related issues as well as her research in the field of language acquisition. Her landmark book, "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women," draws on research in biology and the social sciences to examine why so few women are at the top of their fields.
