Class Credit

General Expectations:

  1. Mentors are expected to maintain a consistent schedule throughout the entire semester.
  2. Mentors are expected to give ample notice should they miss a day of programming.
  3. If taken as a class, mentors are expected to fulfill their class requirements of a weekly log book, activity facilitation, a final paper, a self-evaluation and proactive participation in programming.
  4. Mentors are expected to attend the mentor debriefing sessions and trainings.
  5. Mentors are expected to serve as positive role models to the students we work with and to ask for help from program staff when needed.

Class Requirements:

You may get credit for being a mentor for certain classes at Hunter. Please contact the Director, Jenna Tutjer, at jtutjer@hunter.cuny.edu for more information.

  1. Weekly logs of interactions with mentees (25%)
Mentors are required to maintain a weekly log of reflections, successes and challenges of his/her interactions with the students in the program.  This log is submitted on a weekly basis and reviewed by HCLPP staff, which is then returned to the mentor for review.
  1. Development and implementation of lesson plan/activity (25%)
Each mentor is required to facilitate at least one group activity in the after-school program (though we expect facilitation of three or more activities over the course of the semester).  The mentor is responsible for developing a lesson plan for the activity and for submitting the plan to the instructor at least a week before scheduled facilitation for review and feedback.
  1. 5-7 page final paper (25%)
Each mentor is required to write and submit a final paper at the end of the semester. The paper is a culmination of the learning experience and includes self-reflection by the mentor, what skills were learned and utilized, the role of mentoring in adolescents, etc.
  1. Attendance and participation (25%)
Mentors are evaluated based on their attendance and level of participation. Consistent attendance and proactive, interactive participation in activities are rewarded. Mentors are also expected to attend bi-monthly group trainings and debriefing sessions in order to earn full attendance and participation credit.
  1. Mid-semester and end-semester reflective self-evaluation
This self-evaluation is not graded separately, but is part of the attendance and participation grade.  Each mentor is asked to complete a self-evaluative form of his/her performance mid-semester and again at the end of the semester. The instructor then reviews the form with the mentors and provides feedback for each mentor.

Time Commitment

Our after-school program currently runs three days a week: Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 at Harlem Renaissance High School and Tuesdays from 3:00-5:00 at Hunter College. If mentors participate in HCLPP through a class, they are required to participate at least two days a week.

You may receive work-study and class credit simultaneously.
