Access to Hunter's wireless network, Hunternet, is controlled by your NetID and password. These are entered into a Web browser when you connect. This poses a problem for users with console devices which do not have a Web browser. In order to allow owners of these devices to connect to Hunternet you need to apply for permission to connect without using your NetID.

MAC address

You will be asked for various pieces of information to identify you as the owner of the device, and some information about the device. The most important information about the device is the MAC address. This has nothing at all to do with Apple Macintosh computers. It stands for "Media Access Control" and is the unique number embedded in every network interface, wired or wireless, that allows you to join an Ethernet network. It is therefore also sometimes referred to as the Ethernet address. To all intents and purposes these are the same thing.

Refer to your device's documentation for how to determine its MAC address. You need to obtain the MAC address of the wireless adapter, not a wired adapter if your device contains one. The address is made up of twelve hexadecimal digits grouped 00:00:00:00:00:00 or 00-00-00-00-00-00.

Usage of your device on any Hunter network is of course bound by  CUNY Acceptable Use of Computer Resources [link to IT Security Policies at www.cuny.edu]. All traffic is logged and analyzed. Traffic which infringes Acceptable Use is automatically detected and notified to ICIT and ICIT always takes action to identify the infringing user and follow up with them. 

Because of the potential security risk associated with unauthenticated Internet access, all addresses will be de-listed at the end of every semester. You must re-apply each semester in order to continue to have access.

Follow this link to the application form: Console Wireless Access Request. Remember to have your wireless MAC address to hand. Your request will be handled by the ICIT Service Desks and you will normally receive an acknowledgement of your request, and subsequently a confirmation that your request has been processed in 2-4 working days.
