Overtallies
About Overtallies
We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to get into the courses that are necessary to graduate, and we know that most of the Asian American Studies Program's courses fulfill the Hunter College Pluralism and Diversity requirement. However, permission to overtally can be given by the instructor only, not by the Director, and overtallies must be completed using the Overtally Request Form, available outside 1336 Hunter West.
AAS Overtally Process*
- Overtallies are done via email only.
- Students must email the professor to request an overtally into their course. (Email addresses can be found on the here.)
- Overtallies are not guaranteed and ONLY under the discretion of the professor.
*Please note that this process is only for Asian American Studies hosted courses.
***IMPORTANT*** Once you are given permission by AAS you must ADD the course in CUNYFirst yourself. You will not be registered for the course until you ADD it to your schedule.
Why?
Asian American Studies courses rely heavily on dynamic and relaxed classroom discussion; basically, all AASP instructors run their classrooms as though they are teaching a seminar. All Asian American Studies faculty expect their students to arrive to class having read that day's material and to be prepared to talk about what they have read. If our classes are too large - more than 30 students - it can be very difficult to get students to engage not just with the material, but with their peers as well. As a result, we do our best to limit our courses to no more than 30 students.
We hope you understand that we limit overtallies in order to improve the classroom experience for all students, and to make it possible for everyone - the instructor included - to build a dynamic intellectual community around the course topic. When you do take one of our courses, we are confident that you will benefit from this policy as well.
