President Raab's Letter to the Hunter Community: The Recovery of Maya Leggat

To the Hunter community:

We want to update you on the recovery of Maya Leggat, the Hunter student badly injured after being pushed in front of a Metro-North train on September 25.  We are pleased to report that after extensive surgery, Maya is healing and hopes to be released from the hospital and begin physical rehabilitation soon. She remains upbeat and anxious to return to Hunter as soon as possible.

We have been in regular touch with her family.  Last week, I spoke with Maya and told her that we have created a full scholarship to cover her tuition until she graduates.

We are grateful to Maya’s professors, who have graciously arranged for her to keep up with her schoolwork by sending books, teaching over Skype, and providing personal offers of assistance.  Our thanks to them and to everyone in the Hunter community who has supported Maya in so many ways.

To help pay for medical and recovery expenses, Maya’s family created a fundraising website.  Thanks to the generosity of Maya’s supporters, over $20,000 has already been donated. If anyone in the Hunter community would like to contribute and help Maya’s family reach their $100,000 goal, please visit www.care4maya.com.

We will continue to share the well wishes of the Hunter community with Maya and her family.

Jennifer J. Raab

President
