Professor Steve Greenbaum Wins Distinguished Scientist Award

Hunter congratulates Professor Steve Greenbaum, chair of the Department of Physics, on receiving the 2016 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Greenbaum, a world-class researcher and mentor, will receive his award at the SACNAS national conference in Long Beach, Calif., this October. In its congratulatory letter, SACNAS praised the Hunter physicist for his commitment to advancing the organization’s mission and his exemplary service as a mentor to minority science students.

Since the early 1970s, SACNAS has been working to foster diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, with its conferences and programs now serving more than 25,000 students and professionals every year.

Upon learning of this honor, Greenbaum expressed his deep appreciation for being recognized by an organization he greatly respects. “On a practical level, this honor will help me convey the importance of these kinds of programs and organizations to the federal agencies that have supported my research," he said. "It also serves as a reminder to many of my colleagues that one does not need to make a choice between doing the best science one can do and involving students from segments of the population that are underrepresented in STEM. For me, it’s all been part of the same ride.”
