Health Insurance

Health insurance coverage is required for all J-1 students. We strongly recommend that all international students obtain health insurance during their studies in the U.S. Explore the insurance plans available from the providers listed below to find the benefits that best meet your needs. Some plans offer low monthly premiums or include virtual doctor visits, while others provide coverage for sports injuries, mental health services, and maternity care.

Health Insurance

Health Care and Insurance for Immigrants is designed to help you find health insurance options and health care resources for immigrants in New York City. It tells you how to get health insurance and other health care services. Even if you don’t have health insurance and need care, you can still get it in NYC. There are a number of coverage and care options available depending on your immigration status. All New Yorkers are eligible for and are entitled to health care services regardless of their immigration status.

Each plan includes comprehensive benefits such as coverage for pre-existing conditions, emergency medical care, medical evacuation, and more.

International Student Insurance (ISI) specializes in supporting international students by offering a wide range of resources tailored to their needs. A great place to begin is the Insurance Explained section, which provides information about ISI’s nationwide network of doctors and hospitals and its multilingual customer service.

International Student Protection (ISP) offers competitive, affordable international student health insurance. The short-term accident and sickness medical plans extend protection to international students, scholars, researchers and visitors traveling to the United States, as well as U.S. students studying abroad. Insurance plans are designed for international students that meet visa requirements.

ISOA offers health insurance plans designed to meet visa requirements while providing comprehensive health coverage and multilingual customer service. As the world’s largest international student insurance manager, ISOA provides dedicated health insurance options for F-1 visa international students, J-1 visa scholars and students, F-1 OPT holders, and F-2/J-2 dependents. If you are in the U.S. on a valid visa, ISOA has a plan designed to support your needs.

NYC Care is a health care access program that guarantees low-cost and no-cost services to New Yorkers who do not qualify for or cannot afford health insurance. All NYC Care services are provided through NYC Health + Hospitals. With NYC Care, you can get a unique membership card to access health services, choose your own doctor, and get affordable medications.

NY State of Health Essential Plan offers affordable, comprehensive coverage with $0 monthly premiums for eligible individuals. There is no deductible, so your health care coverage begins immediately. The plan includes essential benefits such as dental and vision care, hospital services, prescription drugs, and more. Preventive care, like routine exams and screenings, is free. You can enroll at any time during the year through NY State of Health.

Required Documents

To enroll in free or low-cost health insurance, you’ll need to provide a few key documents to verify your eligibility. These help confirm your age, identity, residency, income, and in some cases, your U.S. citizenship or qualified immigrant status. Gather these documents ahead of time to make your enrollment process seamless.

  • Proof of Age and Identity: A passport, driver’s license, or other government-issued ID.
  • Proof of Residency / Home Address: Government ID card with address, Postmarked envelope or postcard, Utility bill (gas, electric, cable, water, phone)
  • Proof of Income: Pay stubs, bank statements, or financial aid documentation.

Dental Care

Dental health is an important part of your overall well-being, and Stu-Dent offers a dental plan designed specifically for college students. This plan is provided through the New York University College of Dentistry and makes access to dental care affordable and convenient while you focus on your studies. Services are available only at NYU College of Dentistry locations; non-NYU students can access care at 345 E. 24th Street.
