F-1 Visa

The F-1 Visa is a non-immigrant student visa issued by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for individuals who wish to study in the United States. It allows F-1 students to enroll in Full Time Studies in American universities, language schools, high schools, and other institutions of higher learning. Before applying for an F-1 Visa, you must first obtain a SEVIS I-20 from the International Students Office. Review the required documents to apply for a SEVIS I-20 and follow the outlined steps to complete your F-1 Visa application process.

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda are not required to obtain an F-1 visa stamp in their passport. However, they must still follow all other steps in the process, including applying for a SEVIS I-20, and will receive an F-1 designation on their electronic I-94 upon entry to the United States.

Social Media Requirements For F and J Visa Applicants
  • All Applicants for F or J Nonimmigrant Visas must ensure their social media information is accurately disclosed as part of the visa process.
  • Privacy Settings: Applicants are strongly encouraged to adjust their social media accounts to "public" to facilitate the vetting process used to confirm identity and admissibility under U.S. law.
  • Screening Process: U.S. visa applications (both immigrant and nonimmigrant) require applicants to provide their social media identifiers. This information is used, along with other available data, to identify individuals who may inadmissible or pose a threat U.S. national security.
  • Disclosure Requirement: On the DS-160 visa application form, applicants must list all social media usernames or handles from every platform used in the past 5 years. This includes accounts that are inactive. Do not omit, delete, or archive any accounts created within this time frame.
  • Certification: By signing and submitting the application, applicants certify that all information is true and correct.

* Failure to disclose social media information, or providing incomplete information, may result in visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.

After Your F-1 Visa Decision Notify ISO

Please notify the International Students Office (ISO) of the outcome of your appointment. Students applying for an F-1 visa abroad must inform ISO of their visa appointment results as soon as possible. Students who are currently in the United States and have applied for a change of status to F-1 must use the form below to report the outcome of their application within seven days. Failure to do so may result in the automatic termination of F-1 status in SEVIS due to non-compliance.

Requirements to Maintain F1 Visa Status

Must attend the school that has been authorized on your I-20

  • Undergraduate students: minimum 12 credits per semester
  • Graduate students: minimum 9 credits per semester

At least 75% of your credits must be taken on campus, while up to 25% of your credits may be taken online

  • Undergraduate students: Must take a minimum of 9 in-person credits. Remaining credits may be taken online.
  • Graduate students: Must take a minimum of 6 in-person credits. Remaining credits may be taken online.

In limited situations, you may request a Reduced Course Load (RCL), which allows you to take fewer credits with prior approval from the International Students Office (ISO).

When an RCL May Be Approved
You may qualify for an RCL only for one of the following reasons:
  • Academic Difficulty (one semester only; must stay at least half-time)
  • Medical Condition (requires documentation from a U.S. medical professional)
  • Final Semester (you need fewer credits to complete your degree)

* You must receive ISO approval before dropping below full-time credits. Enrolling below full-time without an approved RCL places your F-1 status at risk.

  • Contact ISO to discuss your situation
  • Submit required documentation
  • Wait for ISO approval before changing your course load

Program Extension

You need to submit a program extension if you have less than three months left on your I-20, and you require another semester or two to complete your studies. Under “Program of Study” you will find your Program Start/End Date. We strongly encourage you to write your Program End Date on your calendar three months before it arrives. If you need additional time to complete your studies, you must submit a Program Extension Form before your I-20 expires.
