J-1 Visa

J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa Information

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa is for students who want to come to the U.S. to participate in a short-term educational exchange program (typically one or two semesters). These programs may be sponsored by the U.S. government, an educational institution abroad, or the government of another participating country. Hunter College only accepts students from the universities listed here, as well as two additional graduate-level institutions: École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and Universität der Künste Berlin. J-1 students must maintain a permanent residence abroad and intend to return there after completing their studies in the U.S.

How to Apply a J1 Exchange Visitor Visa

Social Media Requirements for F and J Visa Applicants

All applicants for F or J Nonimmigrant Visas must ensure their social media information is accurately disclosed as part of the visa process.

  • Privacy Settings: Applicants are strongly encouraged to adjust their social media accounts to “public” to facilitate the vetting process used to confirm identity and admissibility under U.S. law.
  • Screening Process: U.S. visa applications (both immigrant and nonimmigrant) require applicants to provide their social media identifiers. This information is used, along with other available data, to identify individuals who may be inadmissible or pose a threat to U.S. national security.
  • Disclosure Requirement: On the DS-160 visa application form, applicants must list all social media usernames or handles from every platform used in the past 5 years. This includes accounts that are inactive. Do not omit, delete, or archive any accounts created within this timeframe.
  • Certification: By signing and submitting the application, applicants certify that all information is true and correct.

*Failure to disclose social media information, or providing incomplete information, may result in visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.

  • Complete payment of the I-901 SEVIS Fee.
  • Once paid, you may schedule an appointment to apply for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa at the U.S embassy abroad.
