The Hunter College School of Education is dedicated to the preparation of deeply thoughtful, knowledgeable and highly effective teachers, administrators and counselors. Our commitment is to educating future professionals who will make a significant impact on the academic achievement, as well as the intellectual, social and emotional development of their students.

Accreditation Review - Hunter College School of Education

The School of Education at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is hosting an accreditation visit by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Standards in Spring 2016. Federal regulations require that accrediting agencies allow for public comment on the qualifications of institutions or programs under consideration for continued accreditation. Both CAEP and Hunter College recognize graduates, parents, school leaders and the community have valuable perspectives on the quality of programs that prepare teachers and other school professionals. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party testimony to: Board of Examiners, CAEP, 1140 19th Street NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC 20036, or by email to: Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party's relationship to Hunter College (i.e. graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Correspondence must be received by CAEP no later than January 18, 2016 and will be submitted to Hunter College for response via CAEP's Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS). Anonymous comments will not be shared with the site team or Hunter College.

U.S. News & World Report Rates Hunter Among Best in the Nation

The 2014 National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) review of teacher preparation programs, published by U.S. News & World Report, indicates that the Hunter College School of Education offers the greatest breadth of quality across programs in the mid-Atlantic United States and the highest overall ranking in New York State. The review covered 2,000 programs across three categories — elementary, secondary and special education (which was a sampling of over 100 programs). According to the review, Hunter was one of only ten universities nationwide to have both an elementary and secondary program on the lists of Top Ranked Programs." All five Hunter College programs reviewed received a national ranking – one of only four universities in the nation with such a distinction of comprehensive excellence. 

NCTQ also cited Hunter for its “promising or exemplar materials from teacher preparation programs” for two of its innovative practices: 

  • Video Analysis of Teaching (VAT), for its effectiveness in helping student teachers learn classroom management skills;
  • Using Outcomes Data, which the review said strongly fulfills the "Six Core Principles of Improvement” of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
