What is HCLPP?
HCLPP is a drop-out prevention program that strives to assist students with graduating from high school and enrolling in a college or university or finding gainful employment upon graduation from high school. HCLPP is funded through the New York State Department of Education and is one of 55 Liberty Partnership Programs across the State providing such programming.
Currently, HCLPP is a partnership between Hunter College and two urban high schools: Vanguard High School and Harlem Renaissance High School. We conduct programming during the school day, after school and during the summer. The majority of the day and after-school programming is done on site at our two partner schools. Various workshops, activities and summer programming take place on the Hunter campus in order to expose students to a college environment.
Our goal is to provide students comprehensive programming to support them through high school with the aim of graduating from high school and entering college or a meaningful workforce position. In that effort, we provide services such as college exploration and preparation, college tours, workforce development skills, life skills, study skills, SAT/ACT preparation, tutoring, mentoring, clinical social work counseling, and cultural/recreational activities.
HCLPP is able to utilize several key partnerships to provide quality programming to our students. The Columbia University School of Social Work provides graduate interns that provide clinical counseling, group facilitation and workshops to our youth during the school day. The Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center serves as a vital referral for our youth for health and mental health needs, and also provides clinical trainings to our graduate interns. We are also able to utilize several key departments within Hunter College to provide workshops and trainigns to our youth in admissions, financial aid, technology and career development.

Current Funding
HCLPP is funded through the New York State Department of Education. We are fortunate to be afforded state funding, however as the economy shifts and money is allocated to different areas in the state, all LPP's have the potential to loose funding to sufficiently run quality programs. Because of this reality, we know it is imperative to diversify our funding sources so that we can maintain quality programming for our students despite the economic climate of the time.
Goals for the Future
As we diversify and increase our funding, it will also give us the opportunity to improve and expand our program. We have outlined four concrete goals that are important for us to achieve in the near future in order to better serve our community and enhance the lives of our youth:
- Provide stipends for educational internship experiences for students that complete our Career Series of guest speakers, skills workshops and training.
- Create a scholarship fund for graduating seniors to assist with the costs of college such as tuition, books and room and board.
- Provide college tours to schools outside of New York City so that students may be exposed to a wider variety of schools and opportunities that are available to them.
- Improve and expand after-school programming to further enrich student lives through activities, field trips and life skills training.
