Re: Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Updates

Please review the changes to the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program that requires CUNY a public service employer to complete and certify employment for individuals seeking Public Service Loan forgiveness.

All PSLF applications should be password protected or uploaded to a secure portal such as CUNYFirst/Secure DropBox/ or another secured transmission method.

Set up and use Dropbox:

The City University of New York provides Dropbox and Dropbox Paper to all active CUNY students, faculty, and administrative staff. You can use these tools to store and access files from different devices, share files, and collaborate on content. The Training Resources section will help you get started.

You can claim your free Dropbox account by visiting dropbox.cuny.edu and entering your CUNY Login (@login.cuny.edu) credentials. After activating your Dropbox account, you can use those credentials to log in at dropbox.cuny.edu or dropbox.com or via the Technology Service pages for facultystaff, and students.

Find more information on Dropbox on CUNY’s Dropbox site or watch this video on collaborating using Dropbox. Please remember that the Acceptable Use of University Data in the Cloud Policy applies to your use of Dropbox and other CUNY cloud solutions.

Below is a summary of key points in this new legislation:

  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). This application is for current employees.
  • Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness (TEPSLF). This application is for employees that are not current but had previous service with CUNY at the time of the loan. Applications for TEPSLF expires October 31, 2022.
  • The definition of a full-time employee has changed from 35 hours of work per week to 30 hours of work per week.
  • Multiple positions qualify for this benefit.
  • Adjuncts are eligible for PSLF. CUNY credits 3.35 hours worked for each hour of teaching. For example, an adjunct has nine (9) contact hours, (3.35 x 9 = 30.15 hours).
  • The Human Resources department will provide annually a copies of completed PSLF and TEPSLF applications to:

o Any employee that requests a form

o Current employees that had previously certified employment

o An employee ending their employment with CUNY

If you should have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.
