Nursing Entrance Exam (NEX)
The National League for Nursing's Nursing Entrance Exam (NEX) is a standardized entrance exam for students seeking admission to a pre-licensure nursing program. The School of Nursing uses NEX scores, in conjunction with other admissions criteria, for admission into the Generic BS (including first-year Nursing Scholar Program students) and Accelerated Second-Degree (A2D) BS programs.
The NEX is comprised of three computer-based tests administered in one session, each 60 minutes in length:
- Verbal: Reading comprehension and word knowledge (58 questions, 8 unscored)
- Mathematics: Basic computation and mathematical problem solving ability involving numbers and operations, measurement (conversions), algebra, and data and information (45 questions, 5 unscored)
- Science: General principles of high-school or early college level biology, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and health (60 questions, 5 unscored)
The NLN offers study guides and practice exams (by content area or as a bundle) to help nursing school applicants prepare for the exam; see their website for details.
Other subject-based learning resources include Khan Academy, Crash Course, CliffsNotes, and Quizlet.
Registering for an Exam
Applicants may take the NEX remotely with a live proctor or in person at the Hunter College Testing Center. Please visit the Hunter College Testing Center's website for information on how to prepare and register. The exam should be taken by the end of February to be considered for Fall admission.
The School of Nursing allows applicants to take the NEX once every six months and will accept scores for up to two years. If the exam is taken multiple times, we will consider the highest score in the admissions process.
For information about registration and testing procedures, please visit the Hunter College Testing Center.
