Summer 2014 Academic Language Immersion Courses

This summer, the Hunter College English Department will be offering a 5-week immersion program for matriculated emergent bilingual students at Hunter College (i.e. ESL-background students) . The seminars will focus on developing academic writing, reading, and listening, and speaking skills. Classes will meet Monday-Thursday from Monday, June 30, 2014 to Thursday, July 31, 2014.  Each seminar will be free of charge but is subject to cancellation due to enrollment.

The three seminars scheduled are:

·  Writing (9:30-12:00pm): Similar to English 005, this course focuses on paragraph and essay development with attention to in-class writing and researching skills.

·  Reading and Vocabulary (1:00-3:30pm): Similar to 002, this course focuses on close readings of texts and reading comprehension skills as well as works on improving academic and conversational vocabulary use.

·  Integrated Academic Language Skills (Section #1: 1:00-3:30pm; Section #2: 4:00-6:30pm; Section #3: 4:00-6:30pm): This class is a multi-skills course that helps students improve speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills for success in upper-division courses. Instructors will provide tips and practice in activities such as note-taking, participating in class discussions, working with professors and classmates, and giving oral presentations.

Seminar instructors will vary all seminar classes between lectures, demonstrations, student-led partner activities, and group project work. Students will read a variety of texts from newspapers, magazines, and other print/online sources as well as use videos to learn new vocabulary and ideas. There will be one class trip to a museum or cultural place of interest in each seminar.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Attendance at each class meeting of the seminar is mandatory. If a student misses more than one day, she/he will be dropped from the program.

The seminars are intended for currently enrolled Hunter undergraduate and graduate students. Hunter staff and faculty members may register, but priority is given to current Hunter students.
