UTEP Adolescent Education
Undergraduate Teacher Education Pathway (UTEP)
The UTEP Adolescent Education programs are designed to prepare undergraduate prospective teachers to serve as high-quality educators for students in urban secondary schools. These UTEP programs lead to initial certification as a teacher in New York State. These programs include extensive and closely mentored fieldwork experiences in New York City Public schools. Teacher candidates use culturally responsive, student centered teaching methods based in research, theory, and practice to work with learners of all types. The Adolescent Education course of study is usually completed over four semesters.
Programs in Adolescent Education include:
- Biology (BA or BAMA)
- Chemistry (BA or BA/MA)
- Chinese (BA)
- Earth Science (BA/MA only)
- English (BA)
- French (BA)
- Italian (BA)
- Mathematics (BA or BA/MA)
- Physics (BA or BA/MA)
- Spanish (BA)
- Social Studies (BA)
Eligibility Requirements to Declare an Education Major
- Attend a UTEP Information Session.
- Complete the Education Major Interest Form
- An interview with faculty may be required
- Minimum of at least 60 credits, but no more than 90 credits completed by the first semester in the education program (Prospective Adolescent Education students may complete the form after earning 45 credits.)
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Evidence of advanced writing ability through a review of English composition and writing-intensive coursework
- Declaration of a major in the corresponding Liberal Arts & Sciences subject area
Eligibility and Capacity
Seats in our Education majors are limited. Unfortunately, not all eligible students are offered a seat in an education major.
Candidates who are not able to pursue an education are encouraged to make an appointment with a Graduate Education Admissions Advisor or email edadmissions@hunter.cuny.edu and prepare to submit an application to a master’s degree program.
