NLN Pre-Admission Exam (PAX)


The National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX) is a standardized entrance exam for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools nationwide.  The NLN PAX RN is comprised of three main areas: Verbal skills, which consists of both word knowledge and reading comprehension; Mathematics, which includes basic calculations, word problems, and incorporates algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and applied mathematics; and Science, which examines general biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.  The NLN Pre-Admission Exam contains 214 questions: 80 verbal, 54 math, and 80 science, with one hour allowed for completing each section.


You can study for the NLN Pre-Admission Exam by purchasing the National League for Nursing Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam, Editor: McDonald 3rd Edition – available in most bookstores.

Applicants may register online on  Follow the instructions online to register and pay for the Pre-Admission NLN for RN Examination.  Make sure to choose Hunter College as your test site.  Remember your login and password that you create on the NLN website, as you will need this information on your examination date.  If you need more information on registering for the exam feel free to contact the Hunter College Testing Center, located in Room 150N of the 68th Street & Lexington Avenue, Hunter College Campus or via phone on 212.772.4868.

We recommend that applicants take the exam at Hunter for easier transmission and retrieval of test results.  The admissions committee is not responsible for missing test results from applicants who take the exam elsewhere.  Applicants who have taken the NLN Pre-Admission exam at other locations must request test scores to be sent to Maria Luisa Mendoza, Pre-Health Academic Advisor, Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, 425 E 25th St., New York, NY 10010.

Students are allowed to take the NLN Pre-Admission Exam once every six months.  The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing will accept scores for up to two years.  If the exam is taken multiple times we will consider the highest score in the admissions process.
