Major Eligibility Requirements & for Graduation
- =>30 earned credits & grades in all prerequisites by major admission semester
- Grade =>C in all science & two NFS prerequisite & allied courses (credits/non-credit not accepted for NFS majors with exception during COVID Fall 2019-Spring 2020 period)
- Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA (meeting the minimum GPA does not guarantee admissions)
Prerequisites Coursework (Hunter or equivalents accepted. For Cuny cross-campus equivalencies, see the Cuny transfer explorer NFS accepts online & traditional courses from any accredited institution:
- General Chemistry with lab (CHE 10000-10100 OR higher or similar Hunter chem combination or higher) or AP – incl 4 credit with lec/lab
- Organic Chemistry with lab (CHE 12000-12100 or higher or pre-med equivalent or AP) – minimum 4 credits incl lec/lab
- Any college level non-remedial statistics or calculus course (ex: STAT 11000, STAT 11300 or 21300 or other stat/pre-calc or calc course or AP Stat score of 4 or 5)
Allied Coursework Allied courses can be done before or after acceptance to the NFS major. NFS 14100 should be taken no later than the first major semester & NFS 13100 within the first year and can be concurrent with NFS 300 level classes. Majors may take A&P1 and 2 and microbio before or concurrent with NFS elective major classes. Allied courses require a minimum grade of C.
- Food Science I (NFS 13100) – 3 credit minimum
- Nutrition I (NFS 14100 or equivalent) – 3 credit minimum. If taken elsewhere and transferred without equivalency, share syllabus and transfer transcript with NPH/NFS for evaluation..
- Anatomy & Physiology I AND II with lab (BIO 12000 & 12200 or separate Anatomy & Physiology or equivalents -minimum 4 credits each.
- Microbiology (BIOS 23000 or equivalent) – 3 credit minimum (lab from equivalent transfer course is no not required for NFS)
*NFS major must complete or be waived from Hunter’s foreign language minimum intermediate level ‘Focus’ requirement, Waiver obtained Hunter foreign language dept testing, college foreign language study thru intermediate, graduation from a non-English high school, etc. See the Office of Advisement ‘My Degree’ link for CUNY Core & Hunter requirements.
