Newly admitted international students, including both at the undergraduate and graduate levels are required to attend a new international student orientation session during their first semester of attendance. These orientations will familiarize students with the privileges and rights enjoyed by international students in the United States and personal responsibilities;Additionally, Academic Advisors will review the registration and academic advising process( only at the New Student Orienation meeting for F-1 undergraduate students) to provide a smooth transition into Hunter College.

Other topics covered include:

  • The importance of obtaining health insurance
  • Employment options available to International Students in the US
  • Cultural and social activities made available to International Students by non-profit organizations, especially One-to-World
  • Learn healthy lifestyle choices to cope with stress
  • Meet other new international students; establish study groups and or clubs and lifetime friendships
  • information regarding New York State or New Jersey ID cards
  • information regarding limited scholarship resources
  • Explore US classroom and culture
  • Definition and how to avoid plagiarism
  • Definition of sexual harassment and how to prevent its occurrence

Students are encouraged to bring copies of their I-20 (F-1 Student Status) or DS2019 (J-1 Exchange Visitor)forms, Passport, Visa and the Arrival stamp in their passport, as well as a copy of change of status approval notice, if applicable. These documents wll enable the International Students Office staff to answer individual questions quickly and accurately. In addition, any undergraduate students who have already registered for classes are encouraged to bring a copy of their schedule and transfer credit evaluations to assist Academic Advisors in their advising meetings with students.

 All new spring 2020 international student admits are welcome to attend the spring 2020 New International Students Orientation meeting ,planned for Wednesday, January 29 in Room :619 HW from 1:30 PM-3:30 PM.
