PHILO 201(W), Sec. 002[1949]/Mr. Abelson/MTh 2:45-4:00pm

Knowledge and Reality

The course will provide an introduction to the major questions and concepts in two branches of philosophy: metaphysics and epistemology. What is the universe made of? Are there things that aren't physical? Do people have souls? If not, then what makes a person who they are? How can something change, yet remain the same thing? Is there a God? Has the universe always existed or did it have a beginning? Is time travel logically possible? Do we have free will or are all are actions determined by past events? What can we know about the world? How do we acquire knowledge and when are we justified in saying that we have it? All these questions will be addressed and we will consider both classical and contemporary attempts at answering them. Assignments will include two papers of moderate length and two exams.
