PHILO 268(W), Sec. 001[4288]/Mr. Klincewicz/MTh 1:10-2:25pm
Philosophical Psychology
In this course we will examine the systematic relationship between
the
concerns of philosophy and psychology. We will discuss commonsense
psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience. We will discuss the
relative merits and disadvantages of these conceptions of the mind,
and explore how their philosophical foundations bear on various
philosophical issues. As far as it is possible, we will not discuss
the relationship between the mind and body, the other minds problem,
free will, or other metaphysical or epistemological issues that would
fit better in a course on the philosophy of mind.
Course Goals: Through careful study and commitment students will
come
away with a philosophically informed understanding of psychological
inquiry. Students will also come away with a better understanding of
contemporary philosophical inquiry into the nature of mind.
Related outcomes: Students will develop skills in reading difficult
texts, analyzing philosophical arguments of others, and constructing
their own.
