Internships, Fellowships, and other Opportunities

The Office of the Arts helps Hunter College students take their learning beyond the classroom by connecting them with real-world opportunities in the arts. We share internship and job openings through our Internships & Careers page, Instagram, and newsletter—exclusively for current Hunter students and occasionally recent graduates. We also host workshops to guide students on how to prepare strong applications for internships and fellowships.

Here are a few examples of the types of opportunities we help students find.

Internships

Internships may combine tasks that are both specific to an organization’s industry, goals, and culture, as well as entry-level, administrative tasks that are useful in securing a job post-graduation. In addition to our Internships and Jobs page, Hunter students can also find internships through the CUNY Cultural Corps program.

Learn more about how to apply for funding for an unpaid internship here.

Learn more about paid internships offered for academic credit here (link to HUM 201).

Observerships

Observerships give students a chance to watch the inner workings of an arts organization without performing the work-related tasks expected during an internship. These opportunities can be useful to learn more about a specific aspect of an organization, without committing to the duration of an internship. These valuable opportunities are always unpaid, but require a time commitment from participating students.

Fellowships

Fellowships are funded opportunities to take a deep dive into an area of academic or professional interest, often culminating in the development of a specific project. The work done during a fellowship, as well the prestige of the award itself, can be an important step in the professional development of specialized fields.

CUNY Cultural Corps

CUNY Cultural Corps provides hundreds of CUNY students with paid work experience in New York City’s arts and culture institutions.

Internship FAQs

Internships are hands-on opportunities where students can learn about specific aspects of an industry within a professional setting. Internships may combine tasks that are both specific to an organization’s industry, goals, and culture, as well as entry-level and administrative tasks that are important in the professional world more broadly.

These experiences both help students decide if a particular career is right for them, and serve the important role of helping them secure a job in that field post-graduation.

General Questions

We also meet with students in person to help them search for opportunities based on their specific areas of interest.
