Description: The Hunter College Pre-Optometry Society executive board will provide more information about the club and its mission. Title: Trauma Management and Point of Injury Care

Description: We will discuss the main causes of death in emergency care and learn how to manage the three preventable causes of death; which are hemorrhaging, airway compromise, and tension pneumothorax. In addition, we will go over the different phases of initial care from point of injury through medical evacuation. We will have demonstrations of some medical equipment and hands on skills.

Title: Naloxone Training for Pre-Health Students

Description: Naloxone administration is an emergency intervention to prevent opioid overdose. Pre-Health students will get hands-on experience, gain some knowledge about the current opioid crisis and learn how they may help people in their communities. It is also a great experience to include on your health professions graduate school applications. This training will be conducted by the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.

Title: Stress Management for Pre-Health Students:The Wellness Toolbox

Description: As a pre-health student, stress is an unavoidable part of life. Academics, volunteer hours, extracurricular activities—it all adds up. The Wellness Toolbox is a self-study workshop designed to offer participants a useful framework for developing an effective approach to overcoming stress, and unhelpful behavioral patterns. This workshop is geared to helping you learn more about yourself, early warning signs of your triggers, as well as what helps you attain a sense of wellness and what doesn’t. Join us into a journey of your Self! This is a required workshop.

Title: FlexMed Early Assurance Program Application Preparation Workshop for Sophomores

Description: This workshop will review the requirements for application to the FlexMed Early Assurance Program of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). This workshop will specifically focus on how to write the FlexMed essays. A step-by-step analysis of what to discuss in each essay response and how to organize your essay responses will be reviewed. The workshop will also prepare you for the interview. The types of questions you should be prepared to answer and how to be a strong applicant will be covered. Hunter College sophomores who are currently applying or are planning to apply to the Flex-Med Program at ISMMS are strongly encouraged to attend. You will also have the opportunity to speak with successful FlexMed applicant Catherine Stratis. This workshop is a collaboration between Hunter College Macaulay Honors College and the Pre-Health Professions Advising Office.

Title: Community Service 101 for Pre-Health Students

Description: This event will provide information on opportunities for community service. These opportunities include; volunteer work in Disaster Services, Home Fire Preparedness training, Psychological First Aid, Soup Kitchens, Blood Drives, Mass Care and Sheltering. We will explain how each of these events helps in the betterment of those in our communities. This is a required pre-health workshop.

Title: Bioethics and its Application for Interview Preparation

Description: Join the Society of Bioethics and Medicine at our first meeting of the year! We will discuss the principles of bioethics and apply these principles to analyze case studies in order to prepare students for health-related interviews.

Title: CARS MCAT Review Session

Description: There are many myths about the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section, one of which is that your score depends on luck. If you happen to get “good” passages, all is well, but if you don’t, you are in trouble. Thankfully, this is entirely untrue. It’s practice, not luck that will help you conquer the MCAT CARS section. To do well in this section you will need to fundamentally change how you read the passages and go about answering the questions. Join us to learn the strategies to conquering MCAT CARS.

There's no assigned reading beforehand (!), and snacks will be provided by the facilitator, Slavena (because every student knows that a good snack is fundamental to a good day). We look forward to an hour of honest discussion!! Moderator: Slavena Salve Nissan is a fourth-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She graduated from the Macaulay Honors program at Hunter College with a major in biology in 2015. She has interests in poetry, medical humanities, and medical education.

Description: Please join us for a conversation with Dr. Valerie Parkas, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions and Recruitment of Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Parkas received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University and completed her residency training in internal medicine at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical School and her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Memorial Sloan Kettering. She came to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an attending in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in 1997. Dr. Parkas has been involved in both clinical care and medical education from the start of her career.

Title: Doctor Speaker Series: Dr. Hector Sepulveda Alemany

Description: Dr. Alemany attended undergrad at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus where he majored in Biology (2010-2014). Following this, he attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine at San Juan, PR (2014-2018) before applying for residency. He is currently in his second year of Internal Medicine Residency at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. In addition to his time seeing patients, Hector serves as a co-chair of the Minority Housestaff Committee, organizing events and activities for underrepresented minority Internal Medicine residents.

Title: Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program Information Session

Description: Billie Johnsson will discuss Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies. The Research Associate Program is a research program that occurs in a clinical setting. The program is designed to involve Research Associates in many elements of the performance of research while providing opportunities for observing clinical practice in the NYP/WCM emergency department and for extended interaction with clinical providers and patients. The program provides educational and practical experiences that increase knowledge about research methodology and clinical care and may enhance participant’s application to medical or graduate school.

Description: Join the Psychology Club for a talk with Dr. Abigail Benudis. Dr, Benudis is a Resident Psychiatrist with an interest in the intersection of medicine and psychiatry, working with under-served populations, and quality improvement in the medical arena. Completed Bachelor of Arts in Community Health and Spanish in May 2011 at Tufts University and MD, MPH coursework in May 2017 at Tufts University School of Medicine. Title: Overcoming Procrastination for Pre-Health Students

Description: Do you find that you are frequently procrastinating assignments, studying for MCAT, DAT and important tasks? Is it a challenge to manage competing academic demands, while staying on top of assignments? If so, you are not alone. Studies suggest that up to 70% of college students struggle with managing procrastination. Description: The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) formerly known as SMDEP is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. Title: Exploring Health Professions: Clinical Psychologist

Description: Join us for a discussion with Dr. Tyrel Sparks as we explore careers in Clinical Psychology or Health Psychology & Clinical Science, the application process for PhD. or PsyD, what entails these graduate programs require, and what career options you can pursue in healthcare after degree completion. Dr. Tyrel Sparks’s research focuses on substance use and sexual health in sexual minority populations, with a particular emphasis on relationship factors associated with sexual health in gay and bisexual men. His research incorporates an emphasis on intervention development. He is currently the PI on a NIDA funded project which seeks to develop novel interventions to reduce substance use and enhance assertive communication skills within the context of couples HIV testing and counseling with gay and bisexual couples. His work has two primary foci: How relationship expectancies, beliefs and attitudes shape health related behavior among single gay and bisexual men How individual and dyadic factors interact to influence shape health related behavior among gay and bisexual men in main partner relationships with other men.
