About the Pre-Health Program

Introduction to the Pre-Health Program

Pre-Health Program Logo The Pre-Health Office at Hunter College assists students on their path to becoming a doctor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, veterinarian, and select allied health fields, such as physical therapy (PT), physician assistant (PA), pharmacy, and occupational therapy. Pre-Health students at Hunter College receive advising, skills development, access to programs and resources, application planning and review, and guided support so that you are well-prepared when applying to health professions graduate schools.

Dedicated to Your Success

The Health Professions Advising Program (HPAP) at Hunter College is a rigorous, competitive program for students pursuing admission to health professions graduate schools after obtaining their undergraduate degrees.

Students who work closely with our office have a high rate of acceptance exceeding the national average to health professions graduate programs. Our office also provides a repository for storing letters of recommendation and instructor evaluations.

If you are interested in Hunter College's Nursing Program, please visit the Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing website. We do not advise nursing students in the Pre-Health Advising Office.

Recently Accepted to Hunter College?

If you indicated an interest in Pre-Health on your CUNY application, you will receive an invitation in your Hunter email to attend the Freshman Pre-Health Orientation. This workshop introduces you to the requirements and expectations of the Pre-Health Program at Hunter College.

Freshman Students

Please visit our Freshman Students page to view the list of requirements needed to apply to the Pre-Health Program at Hunter College. You may start completing these requirements once enrolled at Hunter.

please note: There is no Pre-Health or Pre-Medical Major at Hunter College. Students interested in applying to the Pre-Health Program at Hunter College must declare a major from Hunter College’s list of majors.

Transfer Students

Transfer students who are accepted to Hunter College and indicate that they are on the Pre-Health track will receive an invitation to attend the Pre-Health Orientation for Transfer Students. This orientation is specifically geared toward new transfer students and is held every August and January.

Second-Degree and Non-Degree Students

If you have already received your Bachelor’s Degree and are interested in pursuing a career in the health sciences, we recommend the following pathways for completing your studies at Hunter:

  • Non-degree program—Students take courses without restrictions or minimum credit requirements. Students in the non-degree program are not eligible for Pre-Health Advising or the Committee Letter. If you would like to learn more about the non-degree program, please contact the Office of Admissions.
  • Second-degree program—Students have access to Pre-Health Advising and a Committee Letter upon completion of a second Bachelor's degree at Hunter College. If you would like to learn more about the second-degree program, please contact the Office of Admissions.

To qualify for a Committee Letter as a second-degree student, you must also meet the below criteria:

  1. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75
  2. Minimum science GPA of 3.5 (Biology, Math, Physics, Chemistry)
  3. Minimum science and cumulative GPA of 3.0 at your prior institution

The Pre-Health Advising Office is not involved with undergraduate, transfer, or post-baccalaureate admissions at Hunter College. For information about general admissions, please visit the Hunter College Admissions Office website.

For academic advising, please visit the Hunter College Academic Advising Office website. The Pre-Health Advising Office does not evaluate transfer credits, assist with general course scheduling, or provide assistance with tuition and/or financial aid.
