Title: American Red Cross at Hunter College Volunteer Orientation
Description: The American Red Cross at Hunter College will host an info-session for Pre-Health students. The event will provide information on opportunities for community outreach. You will receive Red Cross volunteer hours for attending this meeting, Information to register with us will be included below. It is recommended to complete registration as soon as possible to begin accumulating hours. The registration includes an online orientation where you will learn about the Red Cross mission and some information on some of volunteers opportunities. We will have plenty of these opportunities available for you to RSVP to for the weeks following the meeting. These opportunities include; Volunteer work in Disaster Services, Home Fire Preparedness training, Psychological First Aid, Soup Kitchens, Blood Drives, Mass Care and Sheltering. Title: Spanish and Community Health in Latin America Study Abroad Information Session
Description: Dr. Jorge Nowalski will discuss the Spanish and Community Health summer program in Costa Rica. Hunter College joins forces with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) and Hospital Clinica Biblica to offer students planning to enter health professions a six-week program, which will provide them the opportunity to explore health care issues in a developing country while furthering their Spanish language skills and gaining an understanding of the life and culture of Costa Rica. The Spanish for Health Sciences offers two levels of Spanish language instruction, intermediate and advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on an oral placement exam taken upon arrival. The course will prepare students to interview patients, complete patients' files and medical reports, and read texts of medical relevance effectively. The Health Care in Latin America course is intended to create a unique experience for students interested in Latin American and Caribbean Health issues.

Description: The Royal Veterinary College is one of the world’s leading specialist institutions of veterinary medicine, biosciences and veterinary nursing. The College supports a practical learning experience, where students are exposed to a small animal referral hospital, a first-opinion practice, an equine hospital, a farm, diagnostic services and the opportunity to continue professional development. Title: Research Speaker Series: Sun Young (Sunny) Chung
Description: Join us for our inaugural research speaker series. Sunny Chung is a Hunter College alumnus, working in the lab of the award-winning scientist, Dr. Lorenz Studer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has been doing neuroscience research since high school and has worked in several labs studying neurological diseases. In her current role, she has published several papers elucidating the mechanisms of Parkinson's disease using embryonic and induced/patient-derived stem cells. Prior to working at MSKCC, she studied Alzheimer's disease at Weill Cornell and completed a summer research internship at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Description: The application process for medical, dental, optometry and veterinary school takes about a full year, and application planning and time management will play a key role in your success as an applicant.
Staying on a schedule can increase your chances of gaining admission. One of the critical pieces of advice students should follow is to apply early. While it may seem simple, it can be challenging to gather all the necessary materials and obtain the minimum scores and grades you need to gain admission to health professions graduate program of your choice. This workshop will teach you effective time management techniques for the application cycle.

Title: How to Prepare and Apply to Optometry School
Description: If you are interested in becoming a Doctor of Optometry then this workshop is a must! We will cover everything you need to know in order to be a strong applicant to Doctor of Optometry programs. The workshop will discuss all aspects of preparing for and applying to Optometry Schools---there are 20 programs in total---including pre-requisite coursework in science and math, and the necessary types of clinical, volunteer service, and extracurricular experiences. We will also discuss the importance of your GPA and OAT score as well as getting strong course evaluations and letters of recommendations. The workshop will also provide an Application Timeline and review how to navigate the OptomCAS application site. It is highly recommended that a Committee Letter accompany your application to Optometry School. This workshop is required for all Pre-Health students who are considering a professional career in optometry.

We will also discuss the GPA, MCAT score, and clinical and multi-year research experience necessary to be a competitive applicant for an MD/Ph.D. program. Description: The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices; and by ensuring the safety of our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA also has responsibility for regulating the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by minors.
The FDA is responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medical products more effective, safer, and more affordable and by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medical products and foods to maintain and improve their health. The FDA also plays a significant role in the Nation's counterterrorism capability. The FDA fulfills this responsibility by ensuring the security of the food supply and by fostering the development of medical products to respond to deliberate and naturally emerging public health threats.

Title: CARS MCAT Review Session
Description: There are many myths about the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section, one of which is that your score depends on luck. If you happen to get “good” passages, all is well, but if you don’t, you are in trouble. Thankfully, this is entirely untrue. It’s practice, not luck that will help you conquer the MCAT CARS section. Description: We will discuss the main causes of death in emergency care and learn how to manage the three preventable causes of death; which are hemorrhaging, airway compromise, and tension pneumothorax. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies. Title: Mental Health: The Unspoken Pre-Health Requirement
Description: This event is an interactive talk given by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Campus at Hunter College. Following our mission of establishing a supportive community on campus and destigmatizing mental illness, we are going to talk about major issues a typical college student may be dealing with: depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By discussing situations and stories that may sound way too familiar to students, particularly in pre-health field, we are hoping to communicate a better understanding of importance of one’s mental health, and increase one’s knowledge on things one can do to help themselves.We will be discussing these topics in the context of the environment a pre-health student would usually find themselves to be in, and will touch upon some specific examples such as starting school as a pre-health student; stigma in minority communities, as well as medical fields; self-medication; and others.

Title: Stop the Bleed training for Pre-Health Students
Description: The ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding in someone who is injured and effectively assist that person can save a life. A person can bleed to death in under five minutes, and it often takes longer than that for medical personnel to arrive. Members of the public can be the difference between life and death in a trauma situation if they know what to do. STOP THE BLEED is a program that teaches basic bleeding-control techniques including wound packing and tourniquet applications. This program is usually taught to medical students however we have the opportunity for Hunter College students to learn these techniques in classes taught by physicians from Weill Cornell Medicine. There is also the option to receive a certificate at the end of the training. During Stop the Bleed training, you will learn how to: Determine if an area is safe for you to proceed toward a victim to provide assistance Identify any nearby tools to assist you such as a publicly placed bleeding control kit or everyday items that can be used to control bleeding. Use your hands to apply direct pressure at the site of the wound to stop bleeding Pack a deep wound with cloth or gauze to control bleeding Correctly apply a tourniquet to an injured limb to stop bleeding Keep the victim calm until help arrives.

The term “suture” is used to refer both to a specific technique for closing a wound, in which the sides of the wound are stitched together, and to the individual stitches involved in the wound closure. Description: CMMB x Hunter is a new club at Hunter College that partners with CMMB, a global health nonprofit organization, to advocate and bring attention to the lack of proper healthcare women and children face in the developing world. We hope to help educate students, raise awareness levels, and provide practical, real-life experience for students with interests in pre-health, public policy, international relations, and public health. For our first event, we will be showing a documentary, The Heart of Nuba, that explores the life of Dr. Tom Catena, the only doctor serving patients in the remote Nuba Mountains of a war-torn Sudan. There will also be a CMMB representative who may possibly recruit students to volunteer at CMMB! Dr. Tom Catena has been a CMMB medical volunteer in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan since 2008. He is the medical director and sole doctor at Mother of Mercy Hospital, which serves nearly 750,000 people. Patients seek out Dr. Tom for ailments ranging from fractures, diarrhea, thyroid disease, and cancer, to an increasing number of victims of bombing attacks and malnourishment, spurred on by conflict in the region. Dr. Catena’s dedication is so extraordinary that he was listed as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2015 and was nominated in 2016 for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. He graduated from Brown University with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and later received his medical degree from Duke University on a U.S. Navy scholarship.
