NERA MedPrep & SMDEP Summer Program at Columbia University Information Session
Cindy Estevez, the program coordinator for the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Columbia University Medical Center will discuss the NERA MedPrep Program. edPrep is a free, summer enrichment program targeting traditionally underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged New York City and New Jersey resident college freshmen and sophomores interested in attending medical school. MedPrep is a 3 year summer commitment designed to give students an opportunity to develop key skills and competencies important to success on the MCAT and in medical school. Accepted New York resident students begin the MedPrep program at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. The MedPrep Program is best suited for candidates without summer obligations as the program is full-time. Accepted students receive stipend support. There is no application. She will also discuss the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), a free six-week program for freshman and sophomores who are underrepresented in medicine and dentistry and are interested in submitting an application for the March 1, 2016 deadline.

Spanish and Community Health in Latin America Study Abroad Information Session
Dr. Jorge Nowalski will discuss the Spanish and Community Health summer program in Costa Rica. Hunter College joins forces with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) and Hospital Clinica Biblica to offer students planning to enter health professions a six-week program, which will provide them the opportunity to explore health care issues in a developing country while furthering their Spanish language skills and gaining an understanding of the life and culture of Costa Rica. The Spanish for Health Sciences offers two levels of Spanish language instruction, intermediate and advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on an oral placement exam taken upon arrival. The course will prepare students to interview patients, complete patients' files and medical reports, and read texts of medical relevance effectively. The Health Care in Latin America course is intended to create a unique experience for students interested in Latin American and Caribbean Health issues. The course will focus on public health assessment strategies. Through the course, students will be exposed to current challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean and reach an understanding of the way global public health issues unfold in the region. As part of the program students will visit various types of clinics, as well as other points of medical service.
The Commonwealth Medical College Admissions Presentation

The Commonwealth Medical College is an independent medical school located in northeast and north central Pennsylvania that offers a community-based model of medical education with four regional campuses - North, South, West, and Guthrie. Ellen Gunzel, the Outreach Coordinator for a local animal rescue called In Our Hands Rescue will discuss volunteer opportunities for Pre-vet students. She will be starting at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in August and will also answer any questions students may have about the veterinary school application process.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) offers an Early Assurance Program (EAP) to a select group of highly qualified college sophomores who attend Hunter College. The EAP offers a conditional acceptance to URMC following the successful completion of your four-year undergraduate degree. Emelin Martinez, the Manager of the Health Education Adult Literacy Program at New York Presbyterian will conduct a volunteer orientation for students interested in volunteering in the HEAL program. The mission of the program is to improve health literacy of pediatric caregivers with an emphasis on medication adherence and overall health/well-being by empowering them to maximize their medical visits using culturally responsive health education materials taught in waiting rooms throughout the Ambulatory Care Network (ACN) of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Join us for an engaging discussion with Dr. Nelson Sanchez. Dr. Sanchez currently serves as an urgent care physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He has a bachelor's degree from Brown University and a medical degree from NYU School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at NYU Medical Center During his medical training, Nelson conducted research exploring LGBT health and health care. He completed research on medical students' attitudes and clinical experiences with gay, lesbian, and transgender patients, and New York City transgender residents' access to medical care and hormone therapies. His research has been published in various journals, including Family Medicine and the American Journal of Public Health. At Weill Cornell, he currently leads the Safe Zone LGBT Allies Training Workshops, he teaches a course on LGBT health for the first-year medical student class, and he collaborates with medical students on educational initiatives to improve physician training in the care of LGBT patients.

NYU School of Medicine Linkage Visit for Post Bacc Certificate Program Students
New York University School of Medicine will host Hunter College Post Baccs for a linkage information session and campus tour on Friday, October 7th. To qualify or be considered for the NYU linkage program, you must have a 3.5 undergraduate GPA and maintain a 3.75 or higher GPA while enrolled in the Hunter College Post Bacc program. If you are interested in attending please RSVP no later than September 27th. The NYU Linkage visit is for students who are viable candidates and are in the final year of completing the certificate program requirements and plan to apply in the 2016-2017 cycle.

How to Write an Effective Personal Statement
This workshop will teach you how to write an effective personal statement for your medical school applications. The workshop will review the reasons why the personal statement is an important aspect of the AMCAS application, and why you need to devote your time to planning, writing, and editing the statement well in advance of the AMCAS due date. The workshop will also show you how you can best present yourself to the medical admissions staff through your writing. We will review tips for what to avoid in the personal statement as well as tips for what to definitely include. We will also provide examples of well written personal statements and specifically cover how to format your essay and include it in the AMCAS.

Pre-Health Group Advising
Hunter Pre-Health advisers will hold a group advising sessions for students with Pre-Health questions. This session will be held in a classroom setting and will allow students to collectively ask questions of the Pre-Health advising team and to learn from their Pre-Health peers.
