Abstract
Data science and data forensics lend themselves to a natural interaction. Combining fundamental analytic techniques with practical fraud and forensic investigation scenarios creates interesting insights.

In this talk we will present three real-world cases which used different methods to determine the scope and impact of fraudulent behavior in large corporate investigations:

  • 1. Remediating spoliation in large enterprises by using “pseudo” MD5 hashes, ◦ how to find that file someone deleted which wasn’t recoverable from their laptop
  • 2. Building historical knowledge graphs from Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems to identify risky clients ◦ building personal timelines to figure out who pretended to be from somewhere else
  • 3. Reverse engineering Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to reconstruct deleted fraudulent behavior ◦ determining the real books when you have multiple sets of books

For each of these situations we will explore the data available and how we were able to make sense of it to help direct further efforts by legal and/or accounting teams.

Bio
Jorick van der Hoeven is a Data Scientist and Director for People Analytics at Gartner. He came to the world of data by way of forensics: after joining an Analytic and Forensic Technology group at Deloitte in 2012, first in Geneva and later in NYC, he worked on investigations in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, USA, Bahamas, and Canada. These investigations were into two main categories of clients, private wealth managers and consumer manufacturers. By combining data investigation skills with an understanding of forensic methods, he has built impactful solutions which have helped identify key insights on the cases. Starting in 2020, Jorick leveraged his data and forensic skills to help build impactful solutions in people analytics at Gartner, which will help organizations better understand and interact with employees, potential employees, and alumni.

Jorick van der Hoeven has a BS and MS in Computer Science from the University of Oxford, and is a Certified Fraud Examiner in the ACFE, NY Chapter (NYCFE, 2018).
