Title: Stop the Bleed training for Pre-Health Students
Description: The ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding in someone who is injured and effectively assist that person can save a life. A person can bleed to death in under five minutes, and it often takes longer than that for medical personnel to arrive. Members of the public can be the difference between life and death in a trauma situation if they know what to do. STOP THE BLEED is a program that teaches basic bleeding-control techniques including wound packing and tourniquet applications. This program is usually taught to medical students however we have the opportunity for Hunter College students to learn these techniques in classes taught by physicians from Weill Cornell Medicine. There is also the option to receive a certificate at the end of the training.
During Stop the Bleed training, you will learn how to:
Determine if an area is safe for you to proceed toward a victim to provide assistance
Identify any nearby tools to assist you such as a publicly placed bleeding control kit or everyday items that can be used to control bleeding.
Use your hands to apply direct pressure at the site of the wound to stop bleeding
Pack a deep wound with cloth or gauze to control bleeding
Correctly apply a tourniquet to an injured limb to stop bleeding
Keep the victim calm until help arrives

Description: Join us for a panel discussion with current undergraduates and Post Bacc students who will share tips and techniques on how to succeed as a Pre-Health student. Pre-Health students must achieve a grade of B or better in all science courses, engage in research and gain clinical exposure in order to be considered competitive applicants. Come and hear how other Pre-Health students balance these commitments while juggling their academic and extracurricular activities.

Title: Spanish and Community Health in Latin America Study Abroad Information Session
Description: Dr. Jorge Nowalski will discuss the Spanish and Community Health summer program in Costa Rica. Hunter College joins forces with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) and Hospital Clinica Biblica to offer students planning to enter health professions a six-week program, which will provide them the opportunity to explore health care issues in a developing country while furthering their Spanish language skills and gaining an understanding of the life and culture of Costa Rica. The Spanish for Health Sciences offers two levels of Spanish language instruction, intermediate and advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on an oral placement exam taken upon arrival. The course will prepare students to interview patients, complete patients' files and medical reports, and read texts of medical relevance effectively. The Health Care in Latin America course is intended to create a unique experience for students interested in Latin American and Caribbean Health issues.

Title: Research Speaker Series: Sun Young (Sunny) Chung
Description: Join us for our inaugural research speaker series. Sunny Chung is a Hunter College alumnus, working in the lab of the award-winning scientist, Dr. Lorenz Studer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has been doing neuroscience research since high school and has worked in several labs studying neurological diseases. In her current role, she has published several papers elucidating the mechanisms of Parkinson's disease using embryonic and induced/patient-derived stem cells. Prior to working at MSKCC, she studied Alzheimer's disease at Weill Cornell and completed a summer research internship at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Description: The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices; and by ensuring the safety of our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA also has responsibility for regulating the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by minors.
The FDA is responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medical products more effective, safer, and more affordable and by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medical products and foods to maintain and improve their health. The FDA also plays a significant role in the Nation's counterterrorism capability. The FDA fulfills this responsibility by ensuring the security of the food supply and by fostering the development of medical products to respond to deliberate and naturally emerging public health threats.

Description: We will discuss the main causes of death in emergency care and learn how to manage the three preventable causes of death; which are hemorrhaging, airway compromise, and tension pneumothorax. In addition, we will go over the different phases of initial care from point of injury through medical evacuation. We will have demonstrations of some medical equipment and hands on skills.

Description: Naloxone administration is an emergency intervention to prevent opioid overdose. Pre-Health students will get hands-on experience, gain some knowledge about the current opioid crisis and learn how they may help people in their communities. Title: Naloxone Training for Pre-Health Students
Description: Naloxone administration is an emergency intervention to prevent opioid overdose. Pre-Health students will get hands-on experience, gain some knowledge about the current opioid crisis and learn how they may help people in their communities. It is also a great experience to include on your health professions graduate school applications. This training will be conducted by the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.

Description: As a pre-health student, stress is an unavoidable part of life. Academics, volunteer hours, extracurricular activities—it all adds up. The Wellness Toolbox is a self-study workshop designed to offer participants a useful framework for developing an effective approach to overcoming stress, and unhelpful behavioral patterns. This workshop is geared to helping you learn more about yourself, early warning signs of your triggers, as well as what helps you attain a sense of wellness and what doesn’t. Title: FlexMed Early Assurance Program Application Preparation Workshop for Sophomores
Description: This workshop will review the requirements for application to the FlexMed Early Assurance Program of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). This workshop will specifically focus on how to write the FlexMed essays. A step-by-step analysis of what to discuss in each essay response and how to organize your essay responses will be reviewed. The workshop will also prepare you for the interview. The types of questions you should be prepared to answer and how to be a strong applicant will be covered. Hunter College sophomores who are currently applying or are planning to apply to the Flex-Med Program at ISMMS are strongly encouraged to attend. You will also have the opportunity to speak with successful FlexMed applicant Catherine Stratis. This workshop is a collaboration between Hunter College Macaulay Honors College and the Pre-Health Professions Advising Office.

Title: CARS MCAT Review Session
Description: There are many myths about the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section, one of which is that your score depends on luck. If you happen to get “good” passages, all is well, but if you don’t, you are in trouble. Thankfully, this is entirely untrue. It’s practice, not luck that will help you conquer the MCAT CARS section. Description: Dr. Alemany attended undergrad at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus where he majored in Biology (2010-2014). Following this, he attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine at San Juan, PR (2014-2018) before applying for residency. He is currently in his second year of Internal Medicine Residency at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Description: Billie Johnsson will discuss Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies. The Research Associate Program is a research program that occurs in a clinical setting. The program is designed to involve Research Associates in many elements of the performance of research while providing opportunities for observing clinical practice in the NYP/WCM emergency department and for extended interaction with clinical providers and patients. The program provides educational and practical experiences that increase knowledge about research methodology and clinical care and may enhance participant’s application to medical or graduate school.

Description: Join us for a discussion with Dr. Tyrel Sparks as we explore careers in Clinical Psychology or Health Psychology & Clinical Science, the application process for PhD. or PsyD, what entails these graduate programs require, and what career options you can pursue in healthcare after degree completion. Dr. Tyrel Sparks’s research focuses on substance use and sexual health in sexual minority populations, with a particular emphasis on relationship factors associated with sexual health in gay and bisexual men. His research incorporates an emphasis on intervention development. He is currently the PI on a NIDA funded project which seeks to develop novel interventions to reduce substance use and enhance assertive communication skills within the context of couples HIV testing and counseling with gay and bisexual couples. His work has two primary foci: How relationship expectancies, beliefs and attitudes shape health related behavior among single gay and bisexual men How individual and dyadic factors interact to influence shape health related behavior among gay and bisexual men in main partner relationships with other men.
