Mental Health: The Unspoken Pre-Health Requirement
This event is an interactive talk given by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Campus at Hunter College. Following our mission of establishing a supportive community on campus and destigmatizing mental illness, we are going to talk about major issues a typical college student may be dealing with: depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By discussing situations and stories that may sound way too familiar to students, particularly in pre-health field, we are hoping to communicate a better understanding of importance of one’s mental health, and increase one’s knowledge on things one can do to help themselves. We will be discussing these topics in the context of the environment a pre-health student would usually find themselves to be in, and will touch upon some specific examples such as starting school as a pre-health student; stigma in minority communities, as well as medical fields; self-medication; and others.
