Title: New York City Fire Department CPR Training
Description: The FDNY Free CPR Program offers New Yorkers a 30-minute class on compressions-only CPR (please note, this program does not offer CPR certification at this time). The free classes are taught throughout the year by certified FDNY EMS personnel at various locations. To date, the program has successfully trained thousands of New Yorkers in this lifesaving technique.
The course offers the following:
• Basic instruction on performing hands-only CPR
• Basic instruction on how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• Practice mannequins for use during class and take-home instruction for follow-up practice.

Title: Mental Health: The Unspoken Pre-Health Requirement
Description: This event is an interactive talk given by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Campus at Hunter College. Following our mission of establishing a supportive community on campus and destigmatizing mental illness, we are going to talk about major issues a typical college student may be dealing with: depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By discussing situations and stories that may sound way too familiar to students, particularly in Pre-Health field, we are hoping to communicate a better understanding of importance of one’s mental health, and increase one’s knowledge on things one can do to help themselves. We will be discussing these topics in the context of the environment a Pre-Health student would usually find themselves to be in, and will touch upon some specific examples such as starting school as a Pre-Health student; stigma in minority communities, as well as medical fields; self-medication; and others.

Title: Naloxone Training
Description: Naloxone training & advocacy for widespread access to overdose education and training in how to administer naloxone, the life-saving antidote for opioid-associated overdose. Naloxone training seeks to increase the number of lives saved by bystanders and professional first responders (police officers, firefighters, and EMTs).
Title: Trauma First Aid Training
Description: We will discuss the main causes of death in emergency care and learn how to manage the three preventable causes of death; which are hemorrhaging, airway compromise, and tension pneumothorax. In addition, we will go over the different phases of initial care from point of injury through medical evacuation. We will have demonstrations of some medical equipment and hands on skills.
Title: Suturing Clinic
Description: Come and learn how to suture. The term “suture” is used to refer both to a specific technique for closing a wound, in which the sides of the wound are stitched together, and to the individual stitches involved in the wound closure.

Title: Pre-Health Discussion Forum: Public Health; why is it important?
Description: Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases.
Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world.
Public health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research—in contrast to clinical professionals like doctors and nurses, who focus primarily on treating individuals after they become sick or injured. Public health also works to limit health disparities. A large part of public health is promoting healthcare equity, quality, and accessibility.
Join us for a discussion on why public health practice is important and how it can influence a physicians clinical practice. Please read the attached article.
Title: Gatekeeper Training
Description: Gatekeeper training is a workshop that is meant to help members of the Hunter College community be able to better identify signs of emotional distress in other students and once these signs have been identified, to learn ways in order to best approach conversations with students to support them and connect them to supportive resources available to them here on campus. The major goals of this training are the following;
· Increase competence and confidence in knowing when and how to: identify at-risk/struggling students, effectively engage them in discussion and refer them for additional support/help
· Increase knowledge of support resources available to all students at Hunter College including those who have identified students who are at-risk/struggling ( CWS, BRT, Public Safety), when it’s appropriate to reach out to each and how to do so

The Committee Letter workshop organized by the Pre-Health Post Bacc advisor to provide each applicant or reapplicant with valuable information about preparing your Committee Letter Application and your medical, dental or veterinary school application. This includes guidelines for preparing Personal Statements and other parts of the application. Committee Letter Document Requirement
1. 8-10 course evaluations- You must have at least 3 course evaluations from science courses (one from Biology, one from Chemistry, and one from Physics preferred).
2. 6 letters of recommendation- You must have one letter from a Hunter science (biology, chemistry or physics) faculty member, one letter from a clinical supervisor/doctor and, one from a research supervisor.
3. The 8-10 course evaluations and 6 letters of recommendation must all be submitted by February 1st, 2019.

"Research is highly valued at top-tier schools. Without a research background, some applicants will be screened out of interviews, even though they have good grades and a solid MCAT score. Title: Internships in Science and Research

Title: Pre-Health Discussion Forum: Gene Therapy
Description: Current gene therapy research has focused on treating individuals by targeting the therapy to body cells such as bone marrow or blood cells. This type of gene therapy cannot be passed to a person’s children. Gene therapy could be targeted to egg and sperm cells (germ cells), however, which would allow the inserted gene to be passed to future generations. This approach is known as germline gene therapy.
Because gene therapy involves making changes to the body’s set of basic instructions, it raises many unique ethical concerns. The ethical questions surrounding gene therapy include:
1. How can “good” and “bad” uses of gene therapy be distinguished?
2. Who decides which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or disorder?
3. Will the high costs of gene therapy make it available only to the wealthy?
4. Could the widespread use of gene therapy make society less accepting of people who are different?
5. Should people be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human traits such as height, intelligence, or athletic ability?
Attached is some reading material on the issue. Please skim them before the discussion. It will provide sufficient background. This discussion will focus on the ethics of gene therapy.

Description: Pre-Health Organization presents Immigration Workshop with Dr. Aragones from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Join us in an engaging conversation with Dr. Aragones whose areas of expertise include working with primary care provider to address barriers for cancer screening and prevention among minority and immigrant populations, specifically among the Latino population. Dr. Aragones is currently working in the areas of HPV vaccine practices among providers serving large minority populations; developing an intervention to promote the utilization of the HPV vaccine among children of Latino immigrants; and investigating a new model to disseminate and implement evidence-based practices to community physicians serving large Latino populations.

Title: Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Application Workshop
Description: The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) formerly known as SMDEP is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students interested in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. Title: Immigration and Health Workshop with Dr. Aragones
Description: Pre-Health Organization presents Immigration Workshop with Dr. Aragones from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Join us in an engaging conversation with Dr. Aragones whose areas of expertise include working with primary care provider to address barriers for cancer screening and prevention among minority and immigrant populations, specifically among the Latino population. Dr. Aragones is currently working in the areas of HPV vaccine practices among providers serving large minority populations; developing an intervention to promote the utilization of the HPV vaccine among children of Latino immigrants; and investigating a new model to disseminate and implement evidence-based practices to community physicians serving large Latino populations.

Description: The Assistant Director of Enrollment Management, Ashley Adcock will be visiting Hunter to discuss podiatric medicine and applying to podiatry programs.

Title: How to Prepare and Apply to Occupational Therapy Programs
Description: The workshop will discuss all aspects of preparing for and applying to OT programs. This workshop is required for all Pre-Health students who plan to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy.
Title: How to Prepare and Apply to Optometry School
Description: If you are interested in becoming a Doctor of Optometry then this workshop is a must! We will cover everything you need to know in order to be a strong applicant to Doctor of Optometry programs.
The workshop will discuss all aspects of preparing for and applying to Optometry Schools---there are 20 programs in total---including pre-requisite coursework in science and math, and the necessary types of clinical, volunteer service, and extracurricular experiences. We will also discuss the importance of your GPA and OAT score as well as getting strong course evaluations and letters of recommendations.
The workshop will also provide an Application Timeline and review how to navigate the OptomCAS application site.
It is highly recommended that a Committee Letter accompany your application to Optometry School.
This workshop is required for all Pre-Health students who are considering a professional career in optometry.

Description: Hunter College welcomes Ugo Ezenkwele, MD, MPH to speak at Pre-Health Advising’s November Doctor Speaker Series. Dr. Ezenkwele is Chief, Mount Sinai Queens Department of Emergency Medicine & Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has won numerous awards, and as an academician, he has lectured on numerous emergency medicine topics, most notably injury prevention, diversity in medical education and health disparities.
A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University schools of medicine and public health, he was awarded a William J. Fulbright Scholar Fellowship that resulted in the development of trauma and injury surveillance systems for the 21 countries of the Caribbean. He returned home and completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Post residency, as a faculty member at the NYU Department of Emergency Medicine, he received several awards including a Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship from the American Association of Medical Colleges, a faculty-mentoring award for his efforts with the NYU Langone School of Medicine’s Masters Scholar Program and a Visionary Educator Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). While at NYU, he founded a program dedicated to increasing the numbers of minorities in medicine.
At Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, he created the Woodhull Emergency Department Clinical Aide Research and Educational Program (WECARE), which provides clinical and educational opportunities for under-represented pre-medical and pre-physician assistant students. He has been the vice chair of the Academy of Diversity & Inclusion in Emergency Medicine of SAEM and the past president of the Emergency Medicine Section of the National Medical Association.
In these roles, he has been dedicated to making policy changes that have a lasting effect on the next generation of physician leaders and the communities they serve.

Description: New York University School of Medicine will host Hunter College Post Baccs for a linkage information session and campus tour on Thursday, November 8th.
To qualify or be considered for the NYU linkage program, you must have a 3.5 undergraduate GPA and maintain a 3.75 or higher GPA while enrolled in the Hunter College Post Bacc program.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP no later than September 27th.
