Description: Resume writing and networking are vital skills for advancing your professional and academic career. Learn how to show off your experience and connect with people who can guide you on your professional path.
If you are planning to apply for volunteering, internships and research opportunities, this workshop is for you.
This is a required workshop for Pre-Health students.
Title: Managing Procrastination for Pre-Health Students
Description: Do you find that you are frequently procrastinating assignments and important tasks? Is it a challenge to manage competing academic demands, while staying on top of assignments? If so, you are not alone. Studies suggest that up to 70% of college students struggle with managing procrastination. While this may be a common difficulty among students, falling behind academically can lead to increased stress and can cause problems in multiple areas of one’s life. This workshop is designed to help you approach your academic demands differently by discovering new pathways of thinking. You will be encouraged to challenge unhelpful thoughts and re-frame your thinking, which can often lend to more productive outcomes, including increased focus and heightened academic success.

Title: Spanish and Community Health in Latin America Study Abroad Information Session
Description: Dr. Jorge Nowalski will discuss the Spanish and Community Health summer program in Costa Rica. Hunter College joins forces with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) and Hospital Clinica Biblica to offer students planning to enter health professions a six-week program, which will provide them the opportunity to explore health care issues in a developing country while furthering their Spanish language skills and gaining an understanding of the life and culture of Costa Rica.
The Spanish for Health Sciences offers two levels of Spanish language instruction, intermediate and advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on an oral placement exam taken upon arrival. The course will prepare students to interview patients, complete patients' files and medical reports, and read texts of medical relevance effectively.
The Health Care in Latin America course is intended to create a unique experience for students interested in Latin American and Caribbean Health issues. The course will focus on public health assessment strategies. Through the course, students will be exposed to current challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean and reach an understanding of the way global public health issues unfold in the region. As part of the program students will visit various types of clinics, as well as other points of medical service.

Title: Pre-Health Discussion Forum: Boosting the immune system to fight cancer
Description: or years, the foundations of cancer treatment were surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Over the last two decades, targeted therapies are drugs that target cancer cells by homing in on specific molecular changes seen primarily in those cells have also cemented themselves as standard treatments for many cancers.
But over the past several years, immunotherapy—therapies that enlist and strengthen the power of a patient’s immune system to attack tumors—has emerged as what many in the cancer community. In 2017, two CAR T-cell therapies were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), one for the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and the other for adults with advanced lymphomas. Nevertheless, researchers caution that, in many respects, it’s still early days for CAR T cells, including questions about whether they will ever be effective against solid tumors.

Description: As a pre-med student, stress is an unavoidable part of life. Academics, volunteer hours, extracurricular activities—it all adds up. Unfortunately, many students don’t manage stress well—and struggle as a result. While stress can’t be completely avoided, this workshop will teach you how to reduce stress and anxiety. This workshop is a required workshop for new Pre-Health students. This workshop is also strongly recommended for students who are struggling academically or who are applicants in the current health professions graduate school admissions cycle.

Title: Doctor Speakers Series: Dr. Andrea Card
Description: Hunter College welcomes Dr. Andrea Card to speak at Pre-Health Advising’s March Doctor Speaker Series. Dr. Andrea Card is a graduate of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine and completed her Medicine-Pediatric Residency training at Jackson Memorial Hospital-University of Miami. She then completed at General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Columbia University. She is Co-Director of the Psychosocial Curriculum at Weill Cornell Medicine, which fits right in line with her interests in medical education focusing on relationship-centered communication, curriculum development, and health equity. She divides her clinical time seeing patients at the Long Island City practice and precepting residents. Dr. Card is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell. In addition, she serves as the faculty advisor to a medical student-run pipeline program called Science and Medicine Enhancement Program (SMEP) and is the co-faculty lead for the Diversity Pre-medical Diversity Initiatives of the Diversity Center of Excellence (DCoE).

Description: Pre-Health Organization presents Applied behavior analysis Speaker Series with Nicolette Sas. Nicolette Sas, a Bachelors in Healthcare Administration graduate, a former medical student now practicing as an ABA Therapist. Born in Queens, New York on July 16, 1987, moved to South Florida at the age of 12. Lived in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where she attended two years of middle school and completed high school before moving to study abroad in Zagreb, Croatia where she completed two years of Pre-Med and one year of Medical school at the University of Zagreb Medical School. She then decided that at that time in her life she wanted to pursue different avenues and returned to South Florida where she completed her Bachelors in Healthcare Administration at Palm Beach State College. After completing her Bachelor's degree she welcomed the challenge of moving back to New York City in pursuit of the many opportunities New York had to offer. Moving back and starting her career in NYC has always been a dream to her. In June of 2017, just five days after arrival in NYC, she found a job as an Operations Case Manager at CIty Sounds of NY a pediatric based speech language pathology center. It was then that she began to explore the world of services for students with special needs. Nicolette, wanting to further her education in Healthcare and attend Grad school, was faced with making a decision as to what field she wanted to get into. That is when, ABA Therapy was introduced to her. Upon observing students with autism, Nicolette realized that this field was meant for her and that is why she has decided to pursue her Masters in ABA Therapy and practice as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst one day.

Title: Master of Science in Anesthesia Program Information Session
Description: Come and learn about the Master of Science in Anesthesia Program at Case Western Reserve University where our mission is to train the world's best anesthesiologist assistants.
Certified anesthesiologist assistants, or CAAs, are well-respected members of the anesthesia care team, which is comprised of supervising anesthesiologists, anesthetists, nurses and resident physicians-in-training. CAAs work closely with anesthesiologists caring for patients from the preoperative stage through surgery, ending with postoperative recovery.
Students begin their coursework each summer at our locations in Cleveland, Houston, and Washington, D.C. Each class consists of approximately 25 students, with backgrounds in areas such as biochemistry, clinical research and medical physiology.

Description: Pre-Health Organization presents Health Policy Speaker Series with Max Halder. Max Hadler is the Director of Health Policy at the New York Immigration Coalition. He works on a range of issues and campaigns at the city and state levels to improve health access, coverage, and delivery for immigrant communities. Prior to joining the NYIC team, he worked in many capacities related to access to care for immigrants, including project director and research associate at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, researcher at the UCLA North American Integration and Development Center, and Spanish-English medical interpreter at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He has also taught at Hunter College's School of Urban Public Health. Description: Dr. Christopher Mason completed his dual B.S. in Genetics and Biochemistry (2001) from University of Wisconsin-Madison, his Ph.D. in Genetics (2006) from Yale University, and then completed post-doctoral training in clinical genetics (2009) at Yale Medical School while jointly a post-doctoral Fellow of Genomics, Ethics, and Law at Yale Law School (2009). He is currently an Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine, with appointments at the Tri-Institutional Program in Computational Biology and Medicine between Cornell, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Rockefeller University, the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center, and the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute.
Ebrahim Afshinnekoo is a second year medical student at New York Medical College and a Medical Student Research Fellow in the Mason Lab at Weill Cornell Medicine. He has directed the metagenomics projects in Dr. Mason’s laboratory over the last three years, most notably leading the PathoMap project. Ebrahim co-founded the MetaSUB International Consortium with Dr. Mason in 2015 and now serves as the Director of Metagenomics. He is very passionate about educational and community outreach, leading and designing many workshops and curricula on the subject of the microbiome, metagenomics, and bioinformatics analyses. Ebrahim’s research interests focus on the translation of metagenomics approaches to the clinical arena.

He organized a school-wide conference on Islamophobia and Racism in the Healthcare System and has shared his work on Human Rights at several national meetings, including at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. Syed has held several leadership roles at ISMMS. He served as the President of Student Council and was a member of the Student Council Board of Trustees Committee, LCME Accreditation Task Force Committee, and Muslim Students Association at ISMMS. In addition, he has conducted extensive research on sports-related traumatic brain injuries, bibliometrics, and surgical disparities in healthcare. He has additionally co-founded Global Surgery Student Alliance Group at Mount Sinai and is involved in a new curriculum for Global Surgery at ISMMS medical students. Syed intends to combine his clinical interest in General Surgery with his interests in human rights education and refugee healthcare. Outside of academics, Syed has a strong interest in soccer, photo-journalism and traveling.
Title: Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program Information Session
Description: Billie Johnsson will discuss Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies.
The Research Associate Program is a research program that occurs in a clinical setting. The program is designed to involve Research Associates in many elements of the performance of research while providing opportunities for observing clinical practice in the NYP/WCM emergency department and for extended interaction with clinical providers and patients. The program provides educational and practical experiences that increase knowledge about research methodology and clinical care and may enhance participant’s application to medical or graduate school.
Title: Clinical Volunteering 101 for Pre-Health Students
Description: Patricia Cusack, Ed.D., Director of Volunteer Services at MJHS (Metropolitan Jewish Health System, Hospice and Palliative Care,) will conduct an Information Session for students interested in learning about the details of the enrollment process for becoming a hospice volunteer. MJHS is one of the largest hospices in the tri-state area. Once the details are presented, there will be a QA segment so that participants will leave with a solid understanding of 1) the services that are rendered to persons who qualify for the end-of-life hospice support; 2) how volunteers fit into the clinical Interdisciplinary Team work that is unique to the hospice model; 3) what, exactly, volunteers are trained to do and, by contrast, what they are not permitted to do.
Hospice volunteers are a vital part of the Interdisciplinary Team and are under the guidance and supervision of a paid Volunteer Coordinator. Hospice volunteers provide companionship for patients and families, engage in leisure activities (reading, music, games, art, etc. with patients),
enable “life review” projects for patients who are interested, and a host of other creative activities. Of course, hospice services are rendered amidst a clinical setting – in a home, an IPU in a hospital, a nursing home or a hospice residence. An initial screening process is required, followed by 15 hours of training which is mandated by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). Becoming a hospice volunteer is an effective way for pre-health students to gain exposure to the profound experiences of end-of-life care for patients – emotionally, medically, spiritually and psycho-socially.

Dr. April Kisamore completed her Ph.D. in Behavior Analysis at Western New England University and her M.A. in Behavior Analysis at Western Michigan University. April has worked in the field of behavior analysis over 15 years.
Valerie Lyons (MSEd, CRC, LMHC) has worked as a Rehabilitation Professional for over 20 years. She began her career at Samaritan Village, Inc. where she served as the Director of Vocational Educational Services. Upon leaving Samaritan Village, Valerie worked as the Assistant Project Director of the Hunter College/OASAS Work-Study Project. Valerie received her Master of Science Degree in Education from Hunter College and is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Valerie also received certification from the International Life Coach Academy as a Life Coach.
Dr. Kenneth M. Fifer, MD, is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Fifer received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, and subsequently completed Internal Medicine Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY. He is also the assistant director of the Collaborative Care Program at Mount Sinai.
