CUNY is changing the curriculum approval process. Colleges will no longer submit curriculum changes in the Chancellor's University Report (CUR). The last CUR was published in December 2018. Going forward, curriculum changes will be reviewed by CUNY in two separate reports. The Academic Board Report (ABR) will contain all curriculum items requiring State approval (all new degree programs and some changes in degree programs), additions to the Common Core, and changes to academic policy. The ABR will require approval by the CUNY Committee on Academic Program, Policy, and Research (CAPPR) and the CUNY Board of Trustees before items are sent for State approval. Curriculum changes not be included in the ABR (new courses, changes in courses, new minors, changes in degree programs not requiring State approval, etc.), will be part of a separate report which will only require approval by the Chancellor, or her/his designee.
CUNY has not ironed out all the details of this new process. We know the next ABR is due by the end of February and that we will have more information about the non-ABR items by then.
Hunter's review and approval steps (department, school, and Senate) will remain the same. All curriculum will still require approval by Hunter governance and CUNY before it can be implemented. Below is an estimated timeline for Spring 2019.
SPRING 2019 TIMELINE:
The Senate Office now has an email dedicated to all curriculum matters. Please send all Senate curriculum related emails, including proposals and questions, to curriculumreview@hunter.cuny.edu.
Please note that CUNY is requiring an Attestation form to be circulated to all CUNY colleges 21 days before a new program is submitted in the ABR. The form has been posted on the Senate website and must be submitted to the Office of the Provost. The Provost's office will be responsible for submitting the form to CUNY. We highly encourage this form be submitted in the early stages of planning and development (even before the proposals are written and submitted for Senate approval). We will also be encouraging departments to submit State forms along with their proposals, rather than completing them after the proposal has been approved by governance.
