Dr. Mandë Holford co-hosts educational 'battle' for city school kids at Citi Field

Professor Mandë Holford, of the Chemistry Department, recently co-hosted an educational 'battle' at Citi Field with her fellow scientist and good friend Jacqueline Faherty, an astrophysicist and senior scientist at the American Museum of Natural History, which sponsored the event.  According to an article in the daily newspaper amNY, the 'battle' was fought over 'which is mightier and more awesome — the wonders of the ocean or the vastness of space.' Faherty made the case for Team Space, while Holford argued for Team Sea.

The 40-minute interactive program had the scientists fielding a series of questions about size, scale, technology and discovery in space and in the sea; on the jumbotron members of the Mets read some of the questions from students. At the end, the students voted their choice of sea or space by holding up colored paddles; this year, Dr. Holford and Team Sea won the day.

Mets spokesman Harold Kaufman said the team has hosted other education-themed days focused on the weather and college prep. “It’s an opportunity to mix baseball with learning,” he said.
