Professor Dana Sylvan and MA Student Jared Cross Deliver Presentation on Spatial Statistics and Baseball
Professor Dana Sylvan, of the Mathematics & Statistics Department, and Jared Cross, an MA student in Statistics and Applied Mathematics, made a presentation at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Boston this summer, based on their work on spatial statistics and baseball. JSM is the largest and most prominent North American statistical conference, and the talk was a first for Cross. Having worked on the project for more than a year, Professor Sylvan and Cross have developed a novel statistical methodology that improves heat maps in baseball, and the two are planning to submit a detailed paper to a math/stat scholarly journal this Fall. In addtion, Cross has developed a software package that he will share with the statistical community.
