Washington Post Article Looks at Professor Joshua Plotnik's Work on Elephant Cognition

Professor Joshua Plotnik, a visiting psychology professor at Hunter College and founder of the nonprofit Think Elephants International, discussed his work on animal awareness in elephants in a recent article in The Washington Post. Along with a colleague, Rachel Dale of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Plotnik developed a test, "from the perspective of an elephant," that looked at the elephant's level of 'body awareness,' which means that they 'recognize that their bodies have a relationship with the environment.' Plotnik said the test added 'another point to the spectrum of self-understanding' for elephants.
