Professor Claudia Orenstein Tours Japan with Multi-Media Puppetry Performance 'Shank's Mare'

Professor Claudia Orenstein, Chair of the Theatre Department, is touring Japan with Shank's Mare, a multi-media puppetry performance developed collaboratively between New York puppeteer Tom Lee and Nishikawa Koryu V, a master of the Japanese "cart puppetry" tradition, which allows a single puppeteer to operate a fully articulated figure.  The production, which premiered at New York's LaMama Theatre in Fall 2015, includes Hunter graduate Takemi Kitamura, a dance major who serves as one of the lead puppeteers in the show. Another Hunter graduate, Yuki Yokote, who majored in Theatre and now lives in Tokyo, served as translator for the pre-show discussion with the artists. Orenstein worked on the show as Dramaturg and is now performing with the company in Japan, while she pursues her research on Japanese puppetry.
